Winston Day Chief introduced himself to the MAC Budapest fans on home ice in the Tüskecsarnok when he scored two goals, the second one being a last second goal that was scored with the goalie pulled to send the game into overtime. Winston, who we already introduced on our facebook page, looks to be a great addition to the team. He brought an agile style that was filled with momentum in the game against Olimpia Ljubljana. We will be one of the top scorers for our team during the upcoming season. Winston answered a couple questions for us after the game and before the upcoming memorial tournament.
“I'm starting to get used to everything here and I am starting to feel more comfortable. It's gonna be a lot easier now with my wife Maggie here now” said our #77, and everything is getting better day by day. “Everything with the team is getting better and better everyday. I think we're a real good team and we're gonna make it hard for teams to beat us.”
We were curious to see what differences did he find between the style of play in North America and our hockey. Not surprisingly he first mentioned that the size of the rink will take some adjusting to. “The biggest difference is the ice and how big it is, I have to make adjustments to the way I have become used to playing, which was always on the smaller ice surface.”
We mentioned to Day Chief as far as we know not only does his coach like his playing style on the ice but he is quickly becoming a favorite among the fans. “I'm starting to feel more and more comfortable on the ice but I think there is still a lot of improvement that needs to be done.” said Winston in a modest tone. Naturally we were not surprised by his answer for the next question when asked after a great preseason how many goals and points he will score in the MOL League? “I can't promise promise anything in terms of how many goals and points I will score. All I can do is promise that I will try hard every night.”
Winston Day Chief has scored three goals so far during the preseason, the most on the team, one against Slavia Trebic and two against Olimpia Ljubljana. MAC Budapest will face off against EBEL club Graz in the semifinals of the Gábor Ocskay Jr. Memorial tournament with the talented Canadian in their lineup.
